Today, on World Cotton Day, Wildlife Friendly Enterprise Network (WFEN) can announce that we have received a grant from the Regenerative Fund for Nature to support our India Cotton Project in the Satpura-Pench Corridor. This initiative is a pioneering step in transforming cotton production through Regenerative + Wildlife Friendly®️ practices, safeguarding biodiversity and empowering local communities.

About the Project:
The Satpura-Pench Corridor is home to endangered species like the Bengal tiger, leopard, and sloth bear. However, cotton farming, a key livelihood in the region, has been putting pressure on these ecosystems. Our project will work with over 6,000 small-scale farmers to adopt regenerative practices that restore biodiversity, improve soil health, and reduce production costs by up to 30% through bio-inputs.

The area is a critical tiger corridor, and without intervention, linear infrastructure and habitat degradation would threaten both wildlife and local farming. By integrating sustainable land use and strengthening wildlife corridors, the project will protect not only tigers but also leopards, gaur, eagles, and essential pollinators.

WFEN is leading the project in close collaboration with:
•⁠ ⁠WWF-India, leveraging their conservation expertise and helping us develop authentic storylines that resonate with brands and consumers.
•⁠ ⁠COFE Producer Company Ltd, Certified Wildlife Friendly®️ for their cotton production, includes 900 women farmers and works with farmers to help them transition to organic & Regenerative production.

Why It Matters:
This project is not just about cotton—it's about “building economies to save ecologies”. By creating market linkages for Regenerative + Wildlife Friendly®️ cotton, we are proving that sustainable agriculture can benefit both people and the planet. The Cotton Project will serve as a flagship model for regenerative production practices, aligning with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework targets.

September is National Tiger Month in the U.S.!

🐯Tigers, one of the most majestic creatures on the planet, face an urgent threat. Across their habitats, they continue to be endangered by poaching, habitat loss, and illegal wildlife trade.

One shining example of global efforts to protect the species is the World Wildlife Fund’s Tigers Alive Initiative, which aims to double the number of tigers in the wild and increase the tiger population across the countries they reside in by 2034. This initiative mobilizes governments, conservation organizations, and local communities to tackle key threats like poaching and habitat loss while restoring tiger populations across 22 Asian landscapes. 🌾 2024 marks a significant year for the guanacos. The United Nations declared it the Year of Camelids to raise awareness about the importance of camelids, such as llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, and guanacos, to ecosystems and indigenous cultures. Guanacos have also been included in Appendix II of the Convention on Migratory Species, highlighting the need for their protection and international cooperation to ensure their survival and the health of their habitats.

🧶 But there’s more! This year also recognizes these animals’ vital role in local economies, particularly in rural communities. Guanacos are not just a symbol of ecological and cultural richness; they are also a valuable economic asset. In the Patagonian landscape, guanaco fiber is highly prized, offering a quality that sits between vicuña and cashmere.

Unfortunately, elephants are still targeted by poachers for their ivory, driving them closer to extinction. The loss of these key species not only threatens biodiversity but also destabilizes ecosystems…

Despite the challenges, there is hope for elephants. Success stories from conservation efforts across Africa exist, which prove that when communities, governments, and NGOs come together, we can make a real impact.

WFEN would like to highlight the groundbreaking Transformed Poachers program offered by @comaco_zambia which takes individuals who once hunted elephants and trains them to become wildlife protectors. Through education and community rehabilitation, the program turns former poachers into rangers and conservationists who now protect the elephants they once hunted.

Outside of sports, in the animal world, goats may not be the greatest species of all time, but they are unique and worth the detour. They should be as cherished as Simone Biles.

🐐 The goat is also an international phenomenon… you could encounter the Himalayan Tahr in southern Tibet or Nepal, the Nubian Ibex in the deserts of Northern Africa and the Middle East, or travel to a cooler environment to meet the Alpine Ibex, just to cite a few.
